Congratulations to our new officers. On May 26, 2009, we elected Judy Root as Vice President, Elnora Vanderveen as Treasurer and Jo Ward as a Board member. Thanks to Judy, Elnora and Jo for their willingness to serve!
During the May 26 meeting we heard a fantastic history of the Vanderbeek family by James Austin Vanderbeek. Jim showed some very interesting historical items and did a wonderful job explaining what life was like in the mid 1800’s for the Vanderbeek’s and others in and around the St. Louis area. Excellent job Jim! Thanks for the time and effort in making this presentation a success.
There are so many of you that do so much to make the organization run smoothly. I want to take just a minute to single out a few people who have gone the extra mile recently. Gary Irvin and Jo Ward have been soliciting ads for our newsletter and have been quite successful. This is a job that is not easy to do, especially in these tough economic times. I salute both Gary and Jo for their efforts. Thank you both.
Don’t forget our annual strawberry shortcake sale will be held on June 18th. We need volunteers to help with baking from 8am to Noon on June 17 at the St. Louis Methodist Church. We also need volunteers to assist with delivering on June18 (from the Methodist Church). Call Lou Irvin if you have any questions and can volunteer some time.
Please remember that our next meeting will
NOT be held at City Hall. Instead, Diana Luehm will be hosting us at her home (503 Berea St., St. Louis) on June 16, at 7p.m. Diana has authored a play related to the historical Harpers Ferry event. The play will be shown at Central Michigan University in July. We are fortunate to be the first audience to view just a few scenes. Please come out and show support for some of our local St. Louis and Gratiot area artists. It should be quite entertaining.
Our next meeting will be something different than what we have been doing over the past year in that we will not conduct the formal business portion of the meeting. Instead, we will first hear from Phil Hansen about potential future projects for the St. Louis Historical Society and St. Louis in general. Bring any questions you may have for Phil. After Phil is finished we will next be entertained by several scenes from the play Diana Luehm has written about Harpers Ferry. This should be an excellent program.
Please remember to invite a friend or two to join us. I hope to see you all on June 16th at the Luehm home!
All the best,
Eric St. Onge, President
