Equipment Operator

The City of St. Louis Public Works Department is seeking a candidate to fill the position of Equipment Operator for the Department of Public Works. Workload may require that this individual also work with the City of St. Louis Water Department, fulfilling a similar role as Water Operator.  As this is a “base” position within the Departments, candidates should expect to perform the basic tasks of both Departments as Management sees fit.  Required skills and experience are as follows.

  • Minimum of a High school diploma or G.E.D.
  • Experience in sewer or water utility work and repairs is a plus.
  • Experience operating a variety of equipment such as tractors, wheel loader, backhoe, dump trucks, leaf vacuum, mowers, blowers, chain saws, sewer truck, trencher, and similar equipment, is a plus.
  • Candidate must be able to attend training classes as required and obtain the necessary certificates and licenses in the areas of need as determined by Management with input by the candidate.
  • Commercial Driver license class A with N endorsement, or the ability to obtain one. The selected candidate will work with his Department Supervisor to determine when this license will be required.
  • The ability to take direction well, troubleshoot problems and be a team player.
  • The starting rate of pay for this position is $19.71 per hour in accordance with the current Union contract with a probation period of 180 days.
  • This position includes an attractive benefit package including retirement, health, dental and life insurance, paid vacation, sick, personal, holidays, clothing and cell phone allowances.
  • This is a Union position affiliated with the International Brotherhood of Electric Workers Local 876.
  • Areas of work for this position would include but not be limited to, streets, sewers (storm and sanitary), parks, cemetery, municipal pool, water lines, valves, and hydrants, and other DPW and Water Department responsibilities as needed.
  • The selected candidate must be able to adjust his weekly work schedule to meet the requirements of the DPW and Water Department as determined by the Management.

Job Description:

Position Title: Journeyman Electric Line Worker
Location: St. Louis, Michigan
Department: Electric Utility Department
Reports to: Electric Department Foreman

Position Summary:
We are looking for an experienced and dedicated Journeyman Electric Line Worker to join our municipal electric utility team. This individual will be responsible for the installation, maintenance, and repair of electrical power lines and associated equipment within our community’s power grid as well as the operation of the hydroelectric and dual-fuel generating station. The Journeyman Electric Line Worker will ensure safe, reliable, and continuous electrical service to customers, working both independently and as part of a team.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Install, maintain, and repair overhead and underground power lines.
  • Inspect and troubleshoot electrical systems, identifying issues and performing repairs.
  • Respond to emergency calls for power outages, downed power lines, and other electrical issues.
  • Operate heavy equipment such as bucket trucks, digger derricks, and trenchers.
  • Control water flow at the dam. Read charts, meters, and gauges to monitor voltage and current. Check equipment and indicators to detect evidence of operating problems.
  • Ensure compliance with all safety regulations, industry standards, and municipal codes.
  • Maintain accurate records of work performed, materials used, and time spent on tasks.
  • Maintaining accurate records of equipment performance, maintenance, and repairs.
  • Perform maintenance on electrical substations, transformers, switches, hydroelectrical station and other equipment.
  • Work on a rotating on-call schedule to address emergency situations such as outages and to complete operational data and verification of hydro operations.
  • Collaborate with team members and other departments to complete community and other municipal projects.
  • Perform job tasks at heights, in confined spaces, and in various weather conditions.

Qualifications:

  • Valid Journeyman Electric Line Worker certification required.
  • A minimum of 3 years of relevant experience in electric line work, preferably with a municipal utility.
  • Proficiency with standard tools and equipment used in the installation and repair of electrical systems.
  • Knowledge of electrical safety codes and best practices.
  • Ability to safely work on high-voltage systems and troubleshoot complex electrical issues.
  • Valid Class B - commercial driver’s license with the ability to operate utility vehicles.
  • Strong communication skills and the ability to work well with others in a team environment.
  • Ability to lift heavy objects and work in physically demanding conditions.
  • Ability to work flexible hours, including weekends and holidays, in an on-call capacity.

Working Conditions:

  • Work will be performed in both indoor and outdoor environments, with exposure to all types of weather conditions.
  • Frequent climbing, bending, and lifting required.
  • Exposure to high-voltage electrical equipment and potential hazards, requiring adherence to strict safety protocols.
  • On-call responsibilities for emergency response during evenings, weekends, and holidays.

Water Distribution Operator

Seasonal Laborer - Dept. of Public Works

The City of St. Louis Public Works Department is seeking candidates to fill the position of a Seasonal Laborer for the Department of Public Works. Required skills and experience are as follows.

  • A valid Michigan operator’s license is required.
  • Ability to perform various tasks, such as ground maintenance (mowing, leaf and brush pick up, snow shoveling), manual labor and equipment operations, in all types of weather and working conditions is required. Also, must be willing to crawl into small spaces and inspect water lines.
  • Experience operating technology based applications working with an iPad and on a computer desktop.
  • Experience operating a variety of equipment such as tractors, small dump trucks, leaf vacuum, mowers, blowers, chain saws, etc.
  • The ability to take direction well, troubleshoot problems and be a team player.

The St. Louis Police Department is accepting applications from qualified candidates for the position of Full-Time Police Officer.  The St. Louis Police Department provides 24-hour police coverage to the City of St. Louis.  Patrol officers work 12 hours shifts (six 12-hour days and one 8-hour day per pay period).

The St. Louis Police Department is in central Michigan near the intersection of US-127 and M46.  St. Louis is approximately three square miles in size.  The last official US Census shows the population of St. Louis, MI to be 7482.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • All applicants must be MCOLES licensed or eligible for licensing upon appointment.
